School & Employment Support: Career Network

One of the key places where hope for a good life is actualized is via support in school and employment planning. SAS helps people prepare for school by filling out applications together, checking out the college campus together, providing scholarship support and tutoring throughout the school year. In the area of employment support, women involved with SAS receive resume development help, references pertaining to their volunteer and work experience record at SAS, and financial support in attaining the necessary tools and workwear required for their field of employment.

The SAS Scholarship fund was created to ensure that all SAS graduates have an opportunity to return to school without financing being a barrier to their success. Grants are awarded to any qualifying Participant from any level of SAS - ASK, Job Shadowing, Work Experience and Followcare.

Quote from an SAS alumni:

When the Career Network staff member and I sat down to talk about my goals and hopes for what life would look like after graduation, she encouraged me to pursue my dream of post-secondary education. When I shared my fears with her (the "old thinking", telling me that I wasn't smart enough), she listened to me first, and then she assured me that I could do it. She helped me apply to the school, and apply for student loans. The pile of paperwork itself could have been overwhelming if I hadn't had her assistance. When I got accepted into school, she helped me register for classes, because the process was very daunting. The staff at SAS have supported me every step of the way in this new part of my journey.

The SAS scholarship fund helped me in many different ways. There is the financial aspect, of course, but the feeling of emotional support that I feel through this fund is maybe more important. The money helps of course -the pursuit of education is an expensive one- but honestly, knowing that I have people in my corner supporting me is extremely valuable.

After graduation from the A.S.K. Classroom, I was looking to get into the work force. I found the paperwork involved in applying for jobs to be frustrating and confusing. Receiving assistance in resume creation was extremely important, because I desired to be honest, but felt the need for discretion at the same time and did not want to have to explain the gaps in my resume. Career Network helped with this.
